Puerto Rico to Provide Improved E-waste Management Solutions

Posted by on January 5, 2015

WP-Puerto-Rico-EwastePuerto Rico recently made landmark strides toward the domestic management of e-waste with their first multi-stakeholder meeting. Discussions involved pivotal deliberations on how they can regulate and educate businesses and consumers on the new electronics recycling law – approved September 2014 – which amended the 2012 Puerto Rico electronics recycling law.

In collaboration with Nova Terra, another electronics recycler in Puerto Rico, Sims Recycling Solutions discussed and advised on implementation of regulations for the new amendment.

“Sims Recycling Solutions takes great pride in supporting Puerto Rican legislative efforts along with Nova Terra,” stated Sean Magann, vice president of Sims Recycling Solutions. “Responsible recycling and data security should be on everyone’s agenda and Puerto Rico is signaling it is an early adopter. We look forward to providing continued support to its environmental efforts.”

Government officials and agencies such as the Environmental Quality Board (EQB), the Solid Waste Authority (SWA), and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) also attended this discussion to contribute their unique perspectives on rolling out regulation for the region’s new law.

As a part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiative of the Puerto Rico Partnership (PRRP), Nova Terra joined other stakeholders on a task force to collaborate on the law’s regulation and education process.

“Puerto Rico is advancing to prevent more e-waste harm to our landfills, illegal exportation of material, data theft and environmental violations,” stated Vanessa Piereschi, president of Nova Terra Inc. “Nova Terra as the prime e-waste recycler in Puerto Rico, along with Sims’ efforts, is looking forward to providing aggressive solutions to the e-waste problem in Puerto Rico and adopting high international standards to benefit consumers, our customers and the environment.”

Over the coming months the task force will finalize terms to regulate the amendment’s specifications and Sims will be on board with Nova Terra to provide best-in-class electronics disposal services to Puerto Rico.
